Conflicted copies of shared VT data files

A VT Transaction+ file (.vtr) or VT Cash Book file (.vcb) holds all the data for one business, and only one person can have it open at a time. VT's guide suggests sharing files through Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive, and warns that opening a file before the other person's changes have synced creates conflicted versions.

  1. Before opening a shared file

Make sure the file is closed on every other computer, and that the cloud drive shows it fully synced. Dropbox shows a green tick next to the file name.

  2. If a conflicted copy appears

Dropbox saves it alongside the original with "conflicted copy" and a name in the file name. Open both, work out which has the entries you need, and re-enter the missing ones in one file before deleting the other.

  3. Keep a backup

Back up the file before merging, so nothing is lost if you pick the wrong one.

Working on one client together

In Accountin each client's books are held online, so a bookkeeper can reconcile the bank while you prepare the VAT return for the same client, and there is one set of figures.
